Overview
The U.S. biodiesel industry has grown rapidly, bolstered by federal mandates for renewable fuels. Producers and processors of soybeans and other oilseeds embraced these new markets in local processing. To meet increasing demand for biodiesel in the United States and world markets, new biodiesel plants were built with the capability to process multiple feedstocks, enabling other fat sources (i.e., animal fats, white grease from restaurants) to be used in biodiesel production. Continuing demand for fats and oils in biofuel production competes with demand from food oil processors, significantly elevating the price of renewable oil sources and causing some biodiesel processors to temporarily slow or close production. Even so, investment and new construction continues in U.S. biodiesel. August 2008 . . . Biodiesel
