Processed soybeans are the largest source of protein feed and second-leading source of vegetable oil in the world. The United States is the world's leading soybean producer and exporter. Farm value of U.S. soybean production in 2005 was nearly $17.3 billion, the second highest value among U.S.-produced crops, trailing only corn. In 2004, soybeans equalled about 80 percent of U.S. total oilseed production, while other oilseeds—such as cottonseed, sunflower seed and peanuts—accounted for the remainder.
