Local Foods and Farms

I stumbled upon a national experience in local foods recentlyy. “Outstanding in the Field” is exposing hundreds of people to local foods through a unique dining atmosphere. According to their web site, Outstanding in the Field’s mission is to re-connect diners to the land and the origins of their food, and to honor the local farmers and food artisans who cultivate it.

How do they do that? Well, Outstanding in the Field is a traveling restaurant of sorts. The group began in 1999 setting one long table at farms or gardens to honor the farmers and chefs whose good work brings nourishment to the table.

Ingredients for the meal are almost all local and generally prepared by a celebrated chef in the region. Attendees tour the site and then enjoy a locally prepared meal at one long table.

A simple google search for local food tours in your area will bring up numerous results. Visit a local farm in this peak season of produce!
