The Davenport Freight House in Davenport, Iowa, is under construction to become the Quad City Food Hub. Construction has begun on the Fresh Deli by Nostalgia Farms, which will be the first business to open in the food hub. "We want to connect people to the local food they are eating, by showing them the farmer who raised it," says Ed Kraklio, co-owner of Fresh Deli by Nostalgia Farms.

The basis of the food hub is to sell food and products from local farmers to encourage people to eat healthy and local. "Some of the names of the farmers are on our menu with the location of where the product came from," adds Kraklio.

The deli will be one of the main features of the food hub. "We want to them to feel like they are walking into a deli and bakery when they come in."

In addition to ordering food people will be able to buy individual items and low income families will be able to use their assistance cards. "They'll be able to come in and get grab and go items. They will be able to get meats from the vendor, because we will be carrying their products."

The food hub will be energy efficient and there will be other benefits. "We will be hiring soon, because we will need the staff. We'll bring in 5 to 6 people, besides the people that already work for us."

The deli will open in about 2 or 3 weeks. A grand opening will be held after construction is complete on Front Street Brewery, which is expanding into the food hub. The brewery will brew, bottle, serve and sell their own beer. The levee commission is still looking for 4 more businesses to move into the building. The commission's development director says there is interest.
